From organising premieres in Piccadilly Circus, to shooting short films in Argentina, Maya Kavanagh’s career spans over 20 years, multiple continents, and now explores the role of entrepreneurial thinking in the creative industries.
She has worked at the highest levels of international screen production at Scott Free Films London and BBC-owned Lookout Point Pictures; produced several short films, music videos and web series as a freelancer; and worked as an Associate Producer on Western Australian feature films How To Please A Woman and A Few Less Men. Beyond screen arts, Maya has also worked in programming and communications roles at the Black Swan State Theatre Company, CinefestOZ Film Festival, and Screenwest.
In recent years, Maya’s career turned to tech. As Marketing Director for three seasons of West Tech Fest from 2021 – 2023, she was pivotal in the growth of the brand to become recognised as Australia’s largest and longest running tech festival. This work was expanded on through her role as Communications Consultant for Curtin University’s Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship portfolio where she led marketing initiatives to promote entrepreneurial projects and programs.
These experiences have led to a central question that underpins Maya’s work: “can entrepreneurial thinking accelerate growth in the creative industries?” She explores this across her own independent creative practice as a freelance producer and as part of the Creative Futures team at Edith Cowan University.
