Sam Harris

Photographer, Director and Mentor - Sam Harris Photo

In a shared house in south London with his musician mates, Sam Harris turned his bedroom into a makeshift darkroom, gaffer taping the curtains to the wall. Throughout the Nineties he shot sleeve art and promo for major & indie record labels alike, directed a few low budget music clips and was a regular contributor for Dazed & Confused, The Sunday Times Magazine and Esquire, making images of Jarvis Cocker, Victoria Beckham, David Bowie, Blur, Jamiroquai and many others. On the eve of the millennium, his first daughter was born. Harris changed direction and abandoned London. In 2002, with one-way tickets to India the young family set off on what became four nomadic years between India & Australia shooting and living The Routineless Routine. Settling in Balingup in WA’s south west he began shooting Postcards from Home, later to be exhibited internationally and win several awards, including Australian Photobook of the Year (2011). The Middle of Somewhere was published in 2015 (Ceiba Editions) to international acclaim and was nominated for 7 photobook awards, winning 3 including a coveted American ‘Lucie Award’. Known for his emotionally rich, intimate and playful eye Harris has exhibited internationally, notably at the Bibliotheque Nationale de Espana; Les Rencontres d’Arles, France; Benaki Museum, Athens; Delhi Photo Festival; Festival de la Luz, Buenos Aires; Encontros da Imagem, Portugal and Ragusa Foto, Italy. Most recently Sam Co-Directed the multi award winning tourism campaign Queens on the Edge and is currently working on his next photobook ‘Neighbours’ to be published in 2025. He is an intimate insider, reflecting and capturing everyday authentic lives of community, friends, family and the talent he shoots.
